Perhaps Rio's best located venue, the Beach Volleyball Arena has already seen two matches played this morning. Italy defeated Austria while Brazil overcame Canada. On the sand now it's Australia v Costa Rica.

Brazilian pair Alisson Cerrutti and Bruno Schmidt defeated their Canadian opponents 2-0 (21-19, 22-20) at the Beach Volleyball Arena on Copacabana Beach.

FIRST GOLD MEDALLIST AT RIO 2016 SPEAKS

After winning the first gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Virginia Thrasher (USA), winner of the women's 10m rifle shooting event, spoke about her victory. "It was nerve-wracking. My heart was pounding but I would not have changed it," the 19-year-old said.

"I just had a plan today to do the best I could and I'm happy with my result. I would like to thank my family and coaches for being so supportive of me."

The runners up were former-Olympic champions Du Li (Athens 2004) and Yi Siling (London 2012) who won silver and bronze respectively.

ALLEZ LES BLEUS
The women of France have won the very first rugby sevens match in the Olympic Games, and the first Olympic rugby match of any description since 1924. They overpowered Spain by 24-7 in Deodoro Stadium.

 

A lot of British fans are out cheering on the men's road race team of Chris Froome and his hard-riding companions.

On the unquestionably most beautiful and natural of Olympic beach volleyball courts, Alisson Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil are leading against Canadian double Josh Binstock e Samuel Schachter. The home pair were welcomed by deafening cheers as they came out on to the sand.

It's a massive win for the Brazilian women in handball. Their risky strategy of opting to play in a tough group may be paying off, as they have just defeated reigning Olympic champions Norway 31-28 in a thrilling game in the Future Arena. The home nation are looking good for a medal at least.

19-year-old Virginia Thrasher takes the first gold medal of Rio 2016. She took first place in the 10m air rifle with 208. Reigning Olympic champion Du Li finished a close second with 207.
