GOLD FOR BELGIUM
Belgium's Greg van Avermaet has won the men's road race, ahead of Jakon Fuglsang of Denmark and Poland's Rafal Majka.
In an incident-packed race. Vincenzo Nibali of Italy, Sergio Henao of Colombia and Great Britain's Geraint Thomas all crashed out.

BONNE COURAGE
Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to French gymnast Samir Ait Said who took a fall and broke his leg while competing in the men's vault.

PLACE IN THE SHADE TO ENJOY THE GAMES
The Olympic Park's live site seems like a good spot to escape today's blazing sun, grab a drink and watch people infinitely fitter than you do all the hard work.
Check out another of Rio 2016's live sites here.

MAKING HISTORY
The historic moment when France's Camille Grassineau scored the first try in the history of women's Olympic rugby.

GAMES BEGIN ON THE HARDWOOD
Rio 2016's basketball is in full swing on the hardwood of the Carioca and Youth Arenas. France's women beat Turkey 55 to 39 earlier today, while China's women are trailing Canada in the second half of their game.
The tension is steadily building in the clash between France's men and Australia, who led early but now find themselves just three points ahead of the men in blue at the start of the third quarter.
The heavyweights are out later as USA men take on China at 1900.

REACH FOR IT
The tremendous Ana Paula Belo scored 12 goals in Brazil's 31-28 victory over Norway in women's handball. Belo started the Olympic Games with 507 career goals in 141 international matches for Brazil, the two-time Pan American Games champs who finished sixth at London 2012.

INDIA ARE BACK
No country has won more men's Olympic hockey gold medals than India, but it's been thin pickings for the Indians in the last few decades. After a long spell of underperformance, the sleeping tiger is now stirring and the men's side have a good chance of breaking a medal drought which dates back to Moscow 1980.
They got their campaign off to a good start in Rio, beating Ireland 3-2: it's Ireland's first time back in Olympic hockey since 1908.
GREAT SHOWING FROM REFUGEE HEROINE
In her race in the pool here in Rio de Janeiro, Syrian refugee Yusra Mardini, competing for the Olympic refugee team, won her heat of the 100m butterfly.
Mardini helped save the lives of some 20 refugees in the Mediterranean when their boat was adrift on the way from Turkey to Greece.
CRICKET MEETS RUGBY
There was an unexpected visitor at Deodoro Stadium today to witness rugby's return to the Olympic Games – Sachin Tendulkar, the genius Indian cricketer who has scored more test runs and centuries than anyone else. Who knows, maybe one day cricket will be following rugby into the Olympic family.
SPREAD 'EM
Medal hopeful Sergio Sasaki of Brazil achieved the third best score of the first men's team qualification in the artistic gymnastics competition. The qualification was otherwise dominated by the Japanese team, with Kohei Uchimura and Ryohei Kato finishing first and second respectively.

NOT A BAD DAY FOR A STROLL IN THE OLYMPIC PARK
The Olympic Park is filling up with visitors arriving to see the likes of tennis, water polo, gymnastics and more.

CHAMPIONS ON TOP
It was close, but in the end London 2012 water polo champions Croatia prevailed in the pool against the USA, 7-5. Alex Roelse said "it's a big game for us, we started off strong on defence, you can see it was a low scoring game. Towards the end I think we may have gotten a little nervous. It's a lot of the guys' first game, so I think that really played a part, and we rushed into our offence, whereas if we stay calm and we stick to our game plan, we can achieve a lot."
One fan back in the USA dressed up specially to watch the occasion.
