Goal! Germany go 1-0 up against Nigeria. Good build-up play has gifted Luka Klostermann an easy tap.

Basketball: France have lost 96-67 to Spain. The French never seemed to get going and will be disappointed at another quarter-final loss (a repeat of London 2012) to a Spanish team that has looked far from convincing thus far. The Spaniards seemed to have picked themselves up after two early losses in the competition.

PHELPS BACK IN THE POOL!
Despite having just returned home and being on his first official day of retirement, Michael Phelps is back in the pool. However, this time the pool is in his garden and the only competition he seems to have is his wife Nicole and young daughter Boomer. Enjoy the good life, champ.

WHO WILL PLAY BRAZIL IN THE FINAL?
Germany and Nigeria kick-off to decide who will meet the hosts in the final. Brazilians are surely praying it's the latter. Or maybe revenge is the motive.

France are letting this one slip away. Spain now hold a commanding 20-point lead. Surely they'll begin resting players as they look towards the semi-finals.

The USA are through to the men's volleyball quarter-finals after defeating Poland in straight sets!

GYMNASTS AREN'T IMMUNE TO THE ALLURE OF FREE MCDONALDS
The McDonalds in the Olympic village has been a hit with athletes who have finished their events, probably because it's free and about as far from any kind of stringent diet plan as possible.

Team USA's gold medal-winning gymnasts Simone Biles and Aly Raisman are the latest to enjoy some full-fat fun.

Spain are holding on to an 11-point lead in their quarter-final match with France. With a likely semi-final against USA waiting for the victors, both teams will want to get through this one as easily as possible.

GERMANY KNOCK OUT ALL-STAR QATAR
Handball: Germany have shocked Qatar with a 34-22 victory. The Qataris were one of the early favourites after a string of world-class players were naturalised in time to represent the gulf state at Rio 2016.

The Germans will now take on current world and Olympic champions France in the semi-finals.

Football: Brazil make it through to the final! With a stoppage time penalty they were able to make it 6-0. They will play either Germany or Nigeria.

TIGHT CONTEST EXPECTED
Spain and France are locked in a battle for a place in the Rio 2016 men's basketball semi-finals at the Carioca Arena 1. Spain are currently leading in the first quarter. Earlier Australia moved closer to its first Olympic medal in men's basketball by clobbering long-time nemesis Lithuania 90-64. Australia, which has five NBA players on its roster and four who have won championships, will play the Serbia-Croatia winner in the semifinals on Friday. Spain or France will play the winner of USA v Argentina.

BRAZIL GOAL GLUT
Just five minutes gone in the second half at the Maracana, and Brazil make it four. Could this trigger an avalanche of goals? Honduras look utterly bereft.

INDONESIA GOES NUTS
Indonesia wins the gold medal in mixed doubles badminton and a whole nation goes crazy. Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir have beaten Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying in two sets, 21-14, 21-12. It is Indonesia's first gold medal at the Rio 2016 Games, and seventh in Olympic badminton. Malaysia has waited 52 years for an Olympic champion, but their dreams were extinguished here in just 44 intense minutes.

INDONESIA TAKE FIRST SET
There is only one contest that matters in Malaysia and Indonesia right now, and that is the mixed doubles gold medal badminton final. Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir have taken the first set for Indonesia, over Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying.
