A new world
Tuesday

Handball: Brazil are down 15-11 against the Netherlands. The ladies are bidding to go one better than they did in London and reach the semi-finals. They'll need to step it up if they want to do that.

FANS GATHER AT COPACABANA TO WATCH SWIMMING FINALE
After falling off the pace, Tunisian Oussama Mellouli has climbed back up the pack and is now in second place, forty seconds leader behind Jarrod Poort.

Fans are gathering on Copacabana Beach to cheer in the swimmers.

BOLT TIME APPROACHING
Usain Bolt will be out on the track at 12.46pm for heat 9 of the 200m. To keep us occupied in the meantime, there is the triple jump men's final, boxing quarter-finals, featuring reigning Olympic champion Nicola Adams in the women's and new kid on the block Shakur Stevenson in the men's, as well what is sizing up to be a dramatic finale in the men's marathon swimming.

There's also this guy...

BOLT CELEBRATES 'TRADITION' OF WINNING
Usain Bolt has taken to twitter to celebrate his 'tradition' of taking gold at the Olympics. And long may it continue...

The men's triple jump final is about to get underway on the track. Jonathan Edwards' world record looks safe, but can anyone get close to 18m this year?

Oussama Mellouli, Tunisian and Olympic gold medallist in the pool and open water, is looking strong in the men's 10km marathon swim as he tries to defend his London 2012 title. He currently lies in second place behind Australian Jarrod Poort.

HOME SILVER ON THE LAGOON
Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos has just won a hugely popular silver in the 1000m canoe sprint, behind Sebastian Brendel of Germany. Queiroz knows the course on the lovely Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon better than anyone and came third at the 2015 world championships. Brazilian cheers echoed over the lake as he pressed the German hard all the way to the final 100m.

ALL EYES ON OUSSAMA
The marathon swimmers are in the water now for their gentle 10km swim up and down Copacabana beach this morning.  Favourite is Tunisia's Oussama Mellouli, the defending champion and African swimming legend who is set to retire after this epic event in his fifth Olympic Games.

Mellouli mastered the Serpentine in Hyde Park at London 2012. How will he cope with the waters of the South Atlantic?

BOM DIA
Good morning from a Brazil that is still buzzing with Thiago Braz's dramatic triumph in the pole vault shortly before midnight, one of the great stories of these Olympic Games. Truth be told, Team Brazil needed a lift after a couple of near misses and boy did they get it. Other Brazilians will be out to emulate Braz today, starting soon with Isaquias Queiroz dos Santos in the canoe sprint, followed by the Brazilian women closing in on medal positions in handball, football and beach volleyball, plus boxer Robson Conceição going for gold tonight.

There's also the small matter of Usain Bolt back on the track and Simone Biles on the floor. Enjoy!

WHAT A NIGHT FOR BRAZIL

After those epic battles on track, field and court, we're pretty exhausted. When we awake tomorrow, Brazil will be hailing a new hero.

Thiago Braz da Silva has produced one of the defining moment of Rio 2016 tonight. Wonder who'll do it tomorrow.

Tune in to Rio-Time Updates on Tuesday to find out.

BRAZIL 2-0 FRANCE

Does this make up for the 1998 FIFA World Cup Final? After Thiago Braz da Silva stunned Renaud Lavillenie earlier, Brazil have overcome the French in an epic men's volleyball contest. The hosts win the fourth set 25-23 to seal a 3-1 victory and prompt all-out bedlam at a jubilant Maracanãzinho. They are through to the quarter-finals, while France fall victim to the Group of Death.

DA SILVA MAKES HISTORY FOR BRAZIL

Thiago Braz da Silva is Brazil's first ever pole vault gold medallist and only the country's fourth gold medallist in athletics.

The others are Adhemar da Silva (triple jump 1952, 1956), Maurren Maggi (long jump 2008) and Joaquim Cruz (800m 1984).

A legend is born.

BRAZIL REGAIN VOLLEYBALL ADVANTAGE

Brazil have won the third set of their must-win men's volleyball match against France, 25-20. The hosts are one set away from emerging from the Rio 2016 'Group of Death'.
