THE PLACE TO BE

Olympic Boulevard is looking mighty fine as the sun sets in Rio this evening.

VIVA VIVIANI!

Italy's Elia Viviani has won the men's omnium gold medal at the Velodrome! Great Britain's Mark Cavendish took silver while Denmark's Lasse Hansen won bronze. They cycled for 40km in the points race and ended up in exactly the same positions they started it.

Colombian cyclist Fernando Gaviria has brought himself into medal contention in the omnium. He lapped the field to take himself to 36 race points, eight points overall behind current bronze medal position holder Mark Cavendish.

The race is stopped and Republic of Korea rider Sanghoon Park cannot continue. He is taken off injured. Viviani maintains his narrow lead.

There's a collision in the men's omnium points race! And race leaders Lasse Hansen and Mark Cavendish both go down.

HANSEN MAKES HIS MOVE IN THE POINTS RACE

Could Lasse Norman Hansen be about to steal gold from Elia Viviani in the men's omnium? The Danish rider has lapped the field to earn himself 20 extra points. That puts him in silver medal position and just four points behind Italy's Viviani overall.

BRAZIL RELIANT ON ARGENTINA WIN!

There's also some Brazilian basketball success to tell you about, but it comes served with a pretty large caveat. Brazil's 86-69 victory against Nigeria in their final group game keeps alive their qualification hopes, but the hosts are now reliant on a win for arch-rivals Argentina in their game against Spain later. That contest is coming up at 7pm.

BRAZIL ARE BOSSES OF THE BEACH

A huge result for Brazilian beach volleyball as Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt Oscar beat USA pair Phil Dalhausser and Nicholas Lucena in a gripping three-setter at Copacabana. That makes the Brazilians the first pair to reach the men's semi-finals.

WEVERS TAKES GOLD!

Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands has won the gold medal in the balance beam. She capitalised on an error by hot favourite Simone Biles in her routine, although the American's display is still good enough to earn her a bronze medal. The USA's Lauren Hernandez takes silver.

SANNE SHINES

No fourth gold for Simone Biles today. She has already been pushed back into bronze medal position by her compatriot Lauren Hernandez and Holland's Sanne Wevers, who leads after an excellent beam routine gave her 15.466 points.

BILES LOSES HER BALANCE

The USA gymnast had given a typcially graceful performance until her she lost her footing on the beam. Biles regained her composure well for an excellent dismount. But there's a grimace as the score comes through. 14.733, which puts her in the lead after three competitors, but will it be enough for a medal?

OH MY WORD SIMONE BILES. She almost went there. She really almost went. She slips on the beam, wobbles and has to use her hands to prevent herself falling off it.

BILES IS BACK!

Next up in the Rio Olympic Arena is the women's balance beam, where USA gymanstics sensation Simone Biles is going for her fourth gold medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Another miss! Kosovare Asllani set the ball at the perfect height for the keeper, who did well to push the effort wide. 1-1
