DA SILVA WINS POLE VAULT GOLD FOR BRAZIL!

Amazing scenes of joy inside the Olympic Stadium! Lavillenie can't make 6.08m and that hands 22-year-old Thiago Braz da Silva the gold. It's Brazil's first track and field gold and just their second gold of Rio 2016. This was the moment this country has been waiting for.

DA SILVA MOVES INTO GOLD MEDAL POSITION!

Brazil's Thiago Braz da Silva has just broken the Olympic pole vault record with a leap of 6.03m. He has overtaken Renaud Lavillenie and will win gold if the Frenchman misses his next jump... it's 6.08m.

FRANCE LEVEL VOLLEYBALL THRILLER

Meanwhile, at the Maracanãzinho, France have beaten Brazil in the second set of their winner-takes-all men's volleyball clash. It's now 1-1.

Da Silva falls short with his first attempt at 6.03m. But he will get another crack at it...

POLE VAULT CLIMAX

There's also a dramatic Brazil v France contest coming to a head in the men's pole vault final. France's Renaud Lavillenie is in gold medal position, but second-placed home hope Thiago Braz da Silva is about to make an attempt to usurp him. The Olympic Stadium holds its breath.

CAULDRON OF VOLLEYBALL

If you thought tonight was just about athletics, then you thought veeeery wrong. Because there's a men's volleyball match going on at the Maracanãzinho right now that could not be more important to Brazil. The hosts are taking on France in their final group match. Win, and they reach the quarter-finals. Lose, and they're out. Brazil are currently a set up and the arena is rocking.

WHAT A DIVE!

Shaunae Miller has provided one of the moments of Rio 2016 tonight.

DIVING IS THE NEW RUNNING

In case you missed it, Shaunae Miller isn't the first runnner to resort to diving to get ahead at the Olympic Stadium this evening. Brazilian 110m hurdler Joao Vitor de Oliveira did exactly the same thing earlier - with similarly successful results. He finished fourth in his heat to qualify for the semi-finals.

MILLER DIVES FOR GOLD (IN RUNNING)

This is one of the most extraordinary ends to a race you will see. Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas is bossing the women's 400m race as they make the final turn, but the USA's four-time Olympic gold medallist Allyson Felix chases her down on the home straight. With the American seemingly about to pass her opponent with her final strides, Miller takes drastic action. She dives. And we mean, DIVES, across the finish line. There's a delay while the evidence is scrutinsed. Verdict: Miller wins!

SHAUNAE MILLER WINS WOMEN'S 400m GOLD!

And in the most dramatic way you could imagine...

Coming right up, it's the women's 400m final...

RUDISHA WINS 800m GOLD!

Kenya's David Rudisha has stormed to victory in the men's 800m final in a time of one minute and 42.15 seconds, retaining the Olympic title he won at London 2012. Algeria's Taoufik Mahkloufi was second, while Clayton Murphy of the USA took bronze.

POLE VAULTERS RESTART

Similarly, the pole vault competition is also starting again from scratch after being interrupted by rain the first time. It's already under way, in fact.

RAINED-ON HURDLERS TO GET SECOND CHANCE

It has been decided that the 110m hurdlers who failed to qualify from the first two heats, when it was incredibly wet, will get the chance to run again later this evening.

DIVING BRAZILIAN HURDLER WINS HEARTS IN HEAT

Brazil's110m hurdler Joao Vitor de Oliveira has become something of a Twitter sensation in recent minutes due to his novel way of getting an edge over opponents as they cross the finish line. Namely by diving - literally, diving - over the line.

"I always do that, it's no accident. I broke my ribs doing it in China. People tell me not to do it, but it comes from the heart." the 24-year-old said.

And who are we to argue with this interesting technique? The dive helped Oliveira finish fourth in his heat and reach the semi-finals.
