Michael Phelps swam the butterfly in the men's 4x100m medley relay. The USA won gold in what is possibly his last swim at the Olympic Games.

"Getting off the bus, walking to the pool tonight, I almost felt myself starting to cry," he said. "Last warm-up, last time putting on a suit, last time walking out in front of thousands of people representing my country. It's insane.

"This is the way I wanted to finish my career."

Simone Manuel followed her silver medal in the 50m freestyle with a gold in the women's 4x100m medley relay.

"I couldn't really ask for better," she said about the sprint. "I didn't really get to relish in the moment because I had to get to the relay, so I still haven't completely thought about the race but I'm happy with getting back on the podium."

On her country's 1,000th Olympic gold, she said, "It's really special, and the fact that I could do it with the relay is amazing. I mean, just sharing that with three other women is the icing on top of the cake and I couldn't have done this without the relay swimmers, the coaches. I mean, fighting out there with three other women is the greatest honour that you could ever have."

USA swimmer Dana Vollmer won her country's 1,000th Olympic gold medal with the women's 4x100m medley relay team.

"That's just so incredibly amazing and it really makes me think about all the generations of Olympic teams and athletes that I've watched and inspiration that I've had," she said. "I remember watching my first team in 1996 and seeing Kerri (Strug) in gymnastics and just understanding the dedication and the grit when she stood up to do that second vault. I just remember knowing that I wanted to do that and to represent that and we're here getting that 1,000th medal for the US. It's just absolutely incredible."

Greg Rutherford, the London 2012 champion, won bronze in men's long jump at Rio 2016.

"Ultimately, I didn't jump long enough today. That's a very difficult thing to take," he said. "I'm pretty gutted. Things don't always go smoothly. I've just got to settle for that.

"I've won a lot, and today I haven't won and that's something I'm not used to and something I have to deal with and figure out.

"I'm pleased on the last (jump) that I mustered what energy I had left to take me from fourth to a medal position. Still not good enough in my eyes."

Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce won bronze in the women's 100m sprint.

"By far, I would definitely say that this is my best championship ever because I knew how hard I worked. I knew the pain and and the sacrifices and the tears. I knew everything and despite everything, I stuck to it. I kept my head in the game. I am really happy that I persevered.

"I am so happy to stand on the podium. I think this is my greatest medal ever.

"One other thing I am happy about is that Elaine Thompson got the opportunity to cross the line and get a gold medal (for Jamaica). I am really happy for her. I've seen her work hard and it was her time."

Great Britain's Mo Farah defended his Olympic title in the men's 10,000m in spite of falling in the middle of the race.

"When I went down, I thought, 'Oh my God, that is it.' I just got up and wanted to stick with the guys and stay strong. It's never easy but everyone knows what I can do.

"I thought about all my hard work and that it could all be gone in a minute. I wasn't going to let it go. I got up quickly. I thought about my family. It made me emotional."

Jessica Ennis-Hill won silver in the women's heptathlon. Canada's Brianne Theisen-Eaton took bronze.

"This is my last Olympics, and it's strange knowing I won't be at another major championships like these," said Ennis Hill, of Breat Britain. "I'm going to have a break and go on holiday and spend time with my family. These were my second Olympics and to win gold at my first and silver here makes me so proud. IT TAKES SEVEN EVENTS TO DETERMINE THIS ONE OLYMPIC CHAMPION
Belgium septuple-threat Nafissatou Thiam is the Rio 2016 champion in women's heptathlon after edging the defending title-holder, Great Britain's Jessica Ennis-Hill.

Thiam finished with 5,939 points, 142 ahead of the Briton. Canada's Brianne Theison-Eaton won bronze.

THIS IS WHAT JESSICA ENNIS-HILL MUST RUN TO DEFEND HER LONDON 2012 GOLD MEDAL

KEEP 'EM COMING
The USA men's 4x100m medley relay team delivered a follow-up gold medal to the women's triumph moment's earlier.

The gold went to Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller, Michael Phelps, whom you may have heard of, and Nathan Adrian.

Great Britain won silver and Austraila took bronze.

IN THE POOL FOR HIS LAST OLYMPIC SWIM
Or is it? Michael Phelps has not said he will retire after Rio 2016.

He is swimming the third leg of the men's 4x100m relay, and he has just dived in the water for the butterfly and overtaken Great Britain to claim the lead for the USA.
