Arguably Rio de Janeiro's most famous neighbourhood, Copacabana is defined by its 4km-long crescent-shaped beach. It is here that the Beach Volleyball Arena will be located – at the sport's spiritual home in Brazil. The marathon swimming, triathlon, para-triathlon, Olympic cycling road race and Paralympic marathon events will be held in the waters and land around Fort Copabana at the southern end of the beach.

A little further inland, the stunning Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, surrounded by mountains and gazed down upon by Christ the Redeemer, will be the site of Lagoa Stadium. This venue will stage the rowing, canoe sprint and paracanoe events. Maria da Glória, in the northern part of the Copacabana zone, sits alongside Guanabara Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain and will be the base for the sailing competitions.

The rehabilitation and protection of the area's environment, particularly its bays and canals, will be the central legacy focus in this zone.
