The origin of Tennis hark back to the Greek and the Roman, but it was only in French monasteries at the 11th century that it was systematized a duel of hand batted ball against the wall called jeu de paume. The game as we know nowadays began to be played at the second half of the 19th century, in England.
It was one of the nine sports played at the first Olympic Games of the Modern Era, in Athens 1896. It made part of the Olympic Programme till Paris 1924. After that, it was only played again in Seul 1988. There are single (individual players), double, male and female contests.
