The program aims to qualify the Brazilian market for the large demands of the Olympic and Paralympic Games
One hundred thousand square metres of storage, 1 million items of sports equipment, 120,000 chairs and 25,000 tables, 12,000 personal computers, 10,000 TVs, 20,000 radios and 65 electronic scoreboards. These are just some of the items that the Rio 2016™ Procurement area will have to provide for the Olympic and Paralympic Games to take place in 2016. In order to prepare the market to meet demand on the unparalleled scale of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brazil, the Rio 2016™ Committee has prepared a Sustainable Supply Chain Programme, which is in the validation phase.
The programme guarantees compliance with the environmental, social and economic commitments assumed in the bid, as it features strategies for the development of the local market and applies audit methods to inspect production by future suppliers.
“The sustainable programme in the Rio 2016™ Supply Chain is part of the efforts the Olympic Movement has been making since Eco 92. It is important to remember that the Olympic Charter was altered in 1994 in order to include the sustainable development and that the Agenda 21 of the Olympic Movement was published in 1999. Concerning the supply chain management, the programmes developed at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games and the 2012 London Games are two highlights. We wish to continue these excellent initiatives, analysing lessons learnt in each occasion and applying the best practices in the market as well as the Brazilian law guidelines”, comments Bruno Kohn, Procurement Specialist of the Rio 2016™ Organising Committee.
In 2012, the Procurement area will map purchasing demands with each functional area of the Organizing Committee, and will define the requirements for each purchasing category. Such requirements will be broadly divulged by Rio 2016™, which will provide a tool so that suppliers can pre-register.
To better understand the specific factors and challenges of being a supplier to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, interested companies will be invited to participate in training and workshops conducted by the Organizing Committee. A unique combination of operations – transportation of animals, anti-doping samples, firearms, models and ceremony equipment, medals and certificates, sports equipment (yachts, rowing boats, support boats, canoes, kayaks, bicycles, wheelchairs, etc.) – will demand that the market is informed and prepares at least two years in advance.
Through this action plan, companies will know exactly what they will have to supply between 2014 and 2015, when a large share of the service and material provision contracts will be executed.
Fernando Cotrim, the Supply Chain Director of Rio 2016™, explains that “the goal of the programme is to develop the Brazilian supplier market in terms of product and service quality and pursue a new level of sustainable practices, mainly in connection with major events. We need to change the perception that sustainable products are necessarily expensive, because most of the times the price of the product or service can be higher, but the decrease in cost and value waste chain may represent a lower total cost. So, our decisions are based on the total cost of the material and service life cycle and in the value they add to the project. Besides ensuring that all our cost, quality and sustainability requirements are met, we want to leave the legacy a more prepared and competitive supplier market.”
